Pittsburgh was never on my travel list. All I knew was, its “Steel City” nickname and its industrial past. Why would I visit a city of empty factories? But when my sister’s family moved there, I finally gave it a chance and my assumptions were completely wrong. Pittsburgh blew me away. Here are a few highlights that changed my perspective:
- The Strip District – Once a 19th-century industrial hub, it’s now a vibrant cultural center with shops offering international foods and goods that reflect the city’s diversity.

- National Aviary – Don’t miss more than 600 birds from around the world, this one-of-a-kind aviary lets you step into free-flight habitats where toucans, penguins, and flamingos wander just feet away. It’s interactive, educational, and a must for families and nature lovers.

- Phipps Conservatory – A lush oasis in the middle of the city, this botanical garden is a masterpiece of glass and greenery. (Fun fact: it’s tied to the same Phipps family that left a mark in Colorado.)

- Pittsburgh Italian Festival – A celebration of food, music, and tradition. This annual festival brings the warmth and flavor of Italy right to the heart of Pittsburgh. No Italian lover should miss this festival!

- Kennywood Amusement Park – Pennsylvania’s premier amusement park, where thrill-seekers can ride The Steel Curtain, a tribute to the Pittsburgh Steelers!

- Tygart Lake Waterpark – Just two hours away in West Virginia, this serene lake is perfect for swimming, boating, and family fun.

- The Pittsburgh Incline – For the best panoramic skyline views, ride this historic funicular up Mt. Washington. The $2.50 fare is worth every moment.

Final thoughts? Pittsburgh isn’t just the “Steel City”, it’s a city of culture, history, and family-friendly fun. Don’t overlook Pittsburgh when planning your next trip. Go see for yourself why this city will surprise you too.
